New Dundalk FC interim head coach Filippo Giovagnoli admitted he didn’t apply for the job, with the club’s owners approaching him to take on the role at Oriel Park.

Giovagnoli, who will be assisted by Giuseppe Rossi, took training for the first time earlier today after being brought in to replace the departed Vinny Perth. The initial session is said to have gone well.

Among his initial changes include double training sessions for the players and cancelling their weekly day off.

Giovagnoli will be formally unveiled at a press conference at Oriel Park tomorrow.

Asked by DundalkFC.com could he understand supporter concerns about his appointment, he said: “Of course, I understand that and they should be concerned. They’re right but there’s also so many coaches around the world who don’t get an opportunity. When I’ve free time I go to watch coaches and I think that a coach that has a passion and a willingness to learn can coach at a high level and I’m not afraid to do that. I take this challenge. I’m so excited and I’m pretty confident that we’re going to do the job.”
