Dundalk goalkeeper Gary Rogers praised his side for the manner in which they have turned their season around in the wake of Saturday’s win away to Finn Harps.

A 3-0 win away to Ollie Horgan’s side, coupled with Shamrock Rovers drawing at home to Derry City, means that Vinny Perth’s men now hold a five point lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League table.

While Rovers have a game in hand away to Bohemians to play before the sides meet in Dundalk’s next outing in Tallaght on June 28th, it marks an unbelievable turnaround since the Lilywhites’ last trip to the north west on April 12th.

That night a 2-1 defeat to Rogers’ old club Sligo Rovers left the reigning champions 13 points off the pace but 11 wins from their last 12 league outings has left them on top at the break.

Rogers praised his side for making that happen.

“When you were looking at it earlier in the season we were 13 points adrift but the group has worked really hard to get ourselves into the position that we’re in.

“Every week lads are putting in performance after performance so we’re in a good place now.

“Rovers have got a game in hand and you have to assume they will win that but to overturn that 13-point deficit and to put ourselves in the position we’re in is testament to the team and the management team here.”

The veteran was equally happy with the three points in Ballybofey.

“It’s a great night,” he said.

“I think it was important to come up here and get the three points. We were disappointed earlier in the season when we only got a 1-1 draw but it’s a difficult venue with difficult opponents so we’re thrilled to get the three points and the three goals as well so it’s a good night all round.”

While Michael Duffy is not known for his heading ability, Rogers said it was no shock to see the winger pop up with a header to break the deadlock on 32 minutes.

“Michael has been doing that all week in training,” revealed Rogers.

“His heading was brilliant in training and he absolutely buried the one tonight. John Mountney was brilliant in the build-up as well but it was great to get that goal and kick on from there.

“John is flying at the minute, getting plenty of goals. He has been on fire the last few games.

“Garts is excellent in the air too. His goal was a repeat of the goal he got here earlier in the season. He has a phenomenal record of getting on the end of things in the box.”
